Frank and Mary Would Be Proud!
Back in 1907, Frank and Mary Pittman moved into their beautiful new home on the comer of North 28th & Proctor in Tacoma's Northend. They paid Mr. C.W Jones, prominent Tacoma architect and contractor, a whopping $3,000. Frank was the district manager of the Pacific Coast Merchandise Company and a tea broker. He often stored merchandise in his home.
Many families lived in the house throughout the years. It was converted into a duplex in the '40s and eventually fell into disrepair. It seemed destined to be torn down to make room for a parking lot.
Many positive changes have taken place in the Proctor District in recent years. The oldest continu-ously operating movie theatre in the State of Washing-ton, the Blue Mouse, has recently been fully restored by a small group of citizens. The days of tearing down are over. People have a special, positive attitude about this place.
And so, in 1988, Frank and Mary's old house was completely restored. The first floor, filled with beautiful merchandise, was named "The Old House Mercantile Company." In fact, genuine "Fiesta," the dinnerware used at the restaurant and reminiscent of older times, is sold downstairs.
Several years later, in order to more fully utilize the whole building, an expansion program, sensitive to the historic character of the building and neighborhood, was launched. A magnificient 87 year-old stained glass window from a Victorian structure in Yakima, five large light fixtures from a turn-of-the-century Seattle bank, Victorian "fretwork" from a mansion in Philadelphia and a golden oak mantelpiece from the midwest all give added character and charm to our small restaurant.
